CHAPTER FOUR

Luca sat in the backseat of his Town Car that night crammed in between his two burly bodyguards who could’ve been WWE wrestlers. His heart pounded as the driver stopped in front of Iyana’s apartment. He knew damn well he shouldn’t have been there, but already she had a hold on him he couldn’t explain.

Luca told the men he wouldn’t be long and got out of the car. As he stalked up the cement stairs, he went through the speech he’d prepared in his mind. He ‘d told her they had to stay away from each other. Yet here he was like a fool.

Holding his breath and not understanding how a woman made him so uneasy when criminals didn’t, he knocked on the door loud enough it probably woke up the people next door.

“Just a minute!” her sensual voice rang from behind the white door.

Iyana stepped out, her rich nut-brown skin glistening from the moisture of a recent shower. Her bathrobe hugged her supple figure, leaving little to the imagination.

“Luca.” A droplet of water trickled down her neck and he wished his lips could follow it.

“What are you doing here?”

“Um.” He shook his head, switching his gaze from her wet cleavage. “I apologize for showing up so late like this.”

“No.” She looked back at the round wooden clock in her foyer. “It’s only nine-forty-two.”

“Is it?” Luca double-checked his diamond-studded Rolex. “Man, it seems later than that. I’ve been gone all day. Went to Albany, and I guess it seems later than it really is.” He peeked around her. “May I come in?”

She smiled as she stepped aside.

Luca crossed the threshold, greeted by the scent of lavender and vanilla, calming yet intoxicating, much like Iyana herself.

Her apartment was an eclectic mix of modern furnishings and vintage accents, reflecting her unique personality. A collection of antique African masks adorned one wall, while a vibrant tapestry depicting women dancing hung gracefully across another.

“Wow.” He spun around, checking out the digs. “Nice place. Did you do the decorating?”

She shrugged.

“You got an eye for design, hmm?” He picked up the globe from her bookshelf. “Man, I

haven’t seen one of these since I was in school.”

“Can I offer you something to drink?”

“No, thank you.”

“So?” She brushed up against him when she passed and he wondered if she did it on purpose. “To what do I owe this unexpected pleasure?”

“Listen, Iyana.” He cleared his throat. “I told you before–you have to stay away from me. It's for your own good.”

“Is that so?” Amusement danced in her eyes. “And yet, here you are, showing up at my door unannounced. If you truly wanted me to stay away, why come here?”

He shrugged. “I don’t have your number.”

“Ah.” She dipped her head, but not enough for him to miss the grin on her face. “I'm sure a resourceful man like yourself could have found it if you really wanted to.”

“True. I guess I wanted to see you again, even though I know it’s not right.”

“Why isn’t it right?”

“You know damn well why it’s not.
